The origins of this one go back a little over a year now, to this post. I’d also posted that Red Tornado cover on LinkedIn, where people started bringing up other humorous superheroes who’d also based their costumes around red long underwear.
Over time, that gradually sparked an idea: why not put all those characters together on one team? I had to make a list first, to be sure not to forget any of them that were mentioned to me. While that was percolating, I remembered the cover of Justice League #1 from 1987, by Kevin Maguire and Terry Austin. Seemed like a great basis for assembling this team of longjohn-suited heroes for a cover shot.
For those who might not recognize all these characters, I’ll clue you in. The front row (L to R) features Forbush Man and Herbie, the Fat Fury. In the middle row is Super Goof, the Red Tornado and Captain Klutz. And the big guy there in the very back is Supersnipe.
If this were a real comic, it would definitely qualify as quite odd! Including Go-Go checks also made sense to me, for some reason. Hope you enjoy!

Trapdoors Away! Never a call to action, but maybe someday. How could we forget the greatest of them all, Captain Klutz? Super Goof is new to me. After my time and all that. I will have to search Disney for his fare. And Herbie ACG’s contribution to unhinged underwear zaniness is candy pop good. The title lettering you captured leads down to the characters giving the viewer the “comic” in comicbook nicely. Thanks Mark; your skills have lifted the day to a better place. Once again, I want to read the entire book.
If this gives you a better day, and makes you want to read the comic, my work here is finished! Ideally, ALL comic book covers should make you want to read the comic they’re on!
Somehow, I never saw Captain Klutz when I was a kid. If I had, I probably would’ve gone nuts for it. I loved the wackiness of Don Martin (Who didn’t?). I actually went through a phase (probably around the time I discovered MAD) where I tried to draw like him!
I don’t know if you would find anything about Super Goof in any of the Disney cartoons. So far as I know, that version of Goofy was exclusively something they came up with for the Gold Key comics.
Re: the logo: There’s another level to the joke. I created that logo using a Comicraft font called Long Underwear. https://www.comicbookfonts.com/Long-Underwear-font‑p/dl253i.htm I think it’s inspired by the old Superboy logo. Once I came up with this idea, I knew the logo had to use the Long Underwear font.
