It’s now Day 22 of this year’s Jack Kirby Tribute Month, curated by Howard Simpson. Today’s prompt is Bernadeth of the Female Furies!
I drew her for a previous Jack Kirby Tribute Month here. Among the Furies, she projects a more controlled and stoic presence on the surface, but with an underlying intensity. Her weapon of choice is the extendable Fahrenknife, which can penetrate a person and barbecue them…from the inside, no less!
Bernadeth also has the distinction of being the sister of Desaad, Darkseid’s lead torturer.

This year’s depiction is much more malevolent. You seem to have changed the focus from the Fahrenknife to the expression on her face, giving her a really scary “don’t mess with me” stony hard stare. Enough of the tip of the the “blade” is in view for us to know what is coming for something or someone. Jack had those long faces/heads on some of his creations that twisted one’s vision when first exposed to the look. It bet it was tricky to pull off effectively without lapsing into insanity. The long face was an archetype that Jack would use periodically. The Wizard at Marvel also fit into that category. I didn’t find it all that difficult to do, but just needed to pay attention to keep the proportions.
Jack was always a strong stylist, and I’d even go so far as to call him a cartoonist. He wasn’t afraid to exaggerate visual traits in order to get the point across quickly with his visuals. It’s a lesson any aspiring comic artist would do well to learn.
