We’ve made it now to Day 18 of Howard Simpson’s month-long online celebration of Jack Kirby! It’s open to all creatives, and you can find their work on your favorite social media platforms by the hashtag #KirbyArtTributes.
Today’s prompt was Orion, from the book New Gods. Though he’s most definitely on the side of New Genesis and fighting against Apokolips, he has his demons! His story is intertwined with Scott Free/Mister Miracle’s, and rather than spoil it for you, you can read about it in “The Pact” (New Gods #7).
It was fun to try to capture some of the “angry energy” Orion often has in this drawing. Hope you enjoy! Please tune in again tomorrow.
Got ‘em. Great piece. All these head shots have been quite the gift to the viewing public. What I really like is that each piece springs this viewer’s imagination to finish the scene. It would be interesting to see/hear what others see in the rest of their picture. And of course what you conjure also. Thanks
Originally my thought going into these was that they’d just be a series of character portraits. But along the way, in trying to keep it interesting, narrative has sort of crept into a number of them. Which isn’t a bad thing, since we’re talking about characters created to tell a story in the first place. So I’m all for it if the viewer sees these and wants to fill in a story in their own minds.
