What? These weren’t the guys you were expecting? 🙂
ApparÂentÂly back in the mid/late-’60s, someÂone at Dell Comics thought it would be a good idea to take some of the clasÂsic monÂsters and re-imagÂine them as superÂheroes. There had been a sort of resurÂgence of interÂest in the old UniÂverÂsal MonÂsters, due to their expoÂsure to a new genÂerÂaÂtion on TV. You couÂple that with a burst of interÂest around that time in superÂheroes from a pop/camp perÂspecÂtive (thanks to the BatÂman TV show), and you can see the reasoning.
I’ve nevÂer actuÂalÂly come across one of these books to be able check them out for myself. My awareÂness of them is very limÂitÂed, gleaned only from their occaÂsionÂal menÂtions in places like Roy Thomas’ Alter Ego magÂaÂzine, or on varÂiÂous blogs or comics sites.
Then why am I drawÂing these charÂacÂters? I guess there’s a fun sense of wonkÂiÂness to the whole thing that kind of appeals to me. Sort of like watchÂing Plan 9 from OutÂer Space. I thought it would be a kick to just take a crack at these guys and see what it might wind up lookÂing like.
HapÂpy Halloween!
